Building Tour Assessment

Review

Continuously asked questions concerning fire rating time of doors (is this an 1 ½ hour door) in stairwells.

Concerns about obstructions of horizontal egress corridor by Physical Therapy (tree in pot in the corner is obstructing walkway he said).

Door to Storeroom does not close properly and needs to be addressed.

4th floor fire door at stairwell doesn’t latch properly.

IV Pole in hallway in Oncology.

Only storage problem was at Respiratory Therapy. Storage on top shelf was not at the required 18 inches from ceiling or sprinkler system.

Nutritional assessment – he suggested we think about considering that portions of Dietary could be considered Hazardous Material areas.

Dietary walk in freezer door doesn’t function properly. If someone were to get closed inside, the screw out latch that allows them to get out was frozen up and wouldn’t function.

"Remember that in a fire procedure that you slide horizontally until you run out of real estate", he said.

Suggested looking further into Life Safety Code and considering this building being brought up to the 5+ stories codes and procedures since there are 4 main floors plus the basement because you can access the basement from the ground level outside.

Common Questions

What fire rating were the doors to stairwells?

Are EXIT signs easily readable and in proper place?

Are we sure that walls are properly sealed in stairwells to prevent smoke circulation in stairwells in case of fire?

Asked several times about dietary assessments of patients and how quickly they are done and what is done in case Dietician is on vacation? What is back up procedure and is this going to be addressed now that ServiceMaster is involved? Very concerned that we only have one Dietician on staff and what is her availability after hours?

Asked twice if each stair landing should have the number of the floor (including the basement) and make sure they are properly done. Suggested checking with Fire Marshall on additional information being put in place for safety purposes.

Asked about outside lighting into all entrances of the hospital for safety purposes of employees and citizens.

Other Comments

Commended Maintenance staff on such a clean Boiler House (Steam Facilities Plant).

Complimented the safety measures being taken and the solid structure of the building considering its age.

Scribe Comments

Noticed during the tour, the Surveyor several times would get you into side conversation as a distraction while he would check for things that he could site and jot down in his notebook.

Would ask the same question two or three times but would word things just different enough in hopes to throw you off and respond differently.

Continuously concerned about safety and could quote safety codes including the number of the code readily.
